POWER LINES, DEMENTIA, AND THE CONTRADICTIONS OF MODERN LIFE

A recent Swiss study examining more than 3.5 million adults over an 18-year period found a positive association between long-term residential exposure to magnetic fields from high-voltage power lines and mortality from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

The study adds to a growing body of research exploring how long-term exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) may interact with human health and neurological function.

For many people, the idea of living near large electricity pylons feels instinctively uncomfortable. Even without understanding the science in detail, there is often a psychological resistance to living “under the shadow” of visible power infrastructure.

But what’s interesting is the contradiction of modern life:

Many of the same people who would avoid buying a house near high-voltage powerlines will sleep every night with a mobile phone charging beside their bed, wear wireless devices all day, or surround themselves with constant digital connectivity.

Perhaps visibility changes perception.

A towering pylon acts as a visible reminder of electrical exposure, whereas smartphones, Wi-Fi routers, wireless earbuds, and smart devices have become normalised — even intimate — parts of daily life.

This raises an important question:

Have we become psychologically desensitised to the invisible environmental load created by modern technology simply because it is convenient?

Whether or not the science on EMFs is fully settled, the broader conversation matters. Modern humans are now exposed to an unprecedented level of artificial electromagnetic activity compared to any previous point in history.

At the very least, it may be worth applying the same common-sense principles we use elsewhere in health: reducing unnecessary exposure, improving recovery, prioritising sleep quality, and creating periods of disconnection from constant stimulation.

Because sometimes the things we normalise deserve closer examination.

My top 3 EMF hygiene tips you can do for yourself:

1.    Switch your Wi-Fi off at night – you can get socket timers to make this easy.

2.    Do not charge your phone by your bed as it will enhance the EMF. If possible, switch off your phone at night – if not, place your phone in Airplane mode and if you must keep it on, place it in another room. Distance is helpful.

3.    Do not use your laptop on your lap! That’s like having your phone to your ear. And switch the wi-fi setting off if it’s practical to do so when you don’t need to be online.
