A growing body of evidence suggests that non-natural EMFs can affect various aspects of nature, particularly for species that depend on electromagnetic cues for survival. Mammals are not immune to the effects of EMFs either. These fields may disrupt melatonin production and circadian rhythms, leading to sleep disturbances and increased stress levels. Many animals instinctively avoid areas with strong EMF fields, which can result in altered natural ranges and behaviours.
The impact of EMFs also extends to plants. Studies suggest that exposure to these fields can inhibit seed germination, reduce root growth, or even change the growth direction of plants. Moreover, EMF exposure can increase the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to oxidative stress and cellular damage. It has been shown to affect gene expression in plants, which may have implications for their growth and resilience.
At the ecosystem level, the disruption of food webs can occur if pollinators like bees are affected, consequently impacting the plants and animals that depend on them. The avoidance of EMF-rich areas by animals can lead to habitat fragmentation and reduced genetic diversity. As non-natural EMF exposure increases with the expansion of wireless infrastructure, the potential ecological implications will be far-reaching.
